According to different genetic disorders, Polycystic Kidney Disease is divided into two types: ADPKD and ARPKD. Patient with different types of PKD have a great individual difference in the causes of Polycystic Kidney Disease. We will introduce these causes respectively as follow:

What is the cause of ADPKD?

ADPKD, also called adult PKD, is the most common inherited form. Generally, children of patients who have ADPKD have a 50% chance of getting this disease. Signs and symptoms of this type of PKD commonly develop between ages of 30 to 40. If uncontrolled very well, these symptoms will worsen patients’ condition. This form accounts for roughly 90% of Polycystic Kidney Disease cases.

What is the cause of ARPKD?

ARPKD is decided by recessive genes. It means each child has a 25% chance of getting this disease if his parents both carry a gene for PKD. Signs and symptoms of ARPKD often appear shortly after birth. In some cases, these symptoms don’t occur until later in childhood. ARPKD is more difficult than ADPKD to control.

From the above, we can know the root cause of Polycystic Kidney Disease is genetic disorder. At present, we can do nothing to correct our abnormal genes effectively, so the most effective treatment is to slow down the progression of PKD developing end stage renal disease (ESRD). To control PKD, here we recommend some therapies: surgery, Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy, dialysis and kidney transplant. Each treatment has its own advantages and disadvantages. Patients should choose right treatment according to their specific condition.

Another thing needs to note is that the patients should make clear their cause of Polycystic Kidney Disease before taking any treatment. Remember that even though PKD can’t be treated completely, you can still live as long as others with correct treatment.
