Cupping

What is Cupping?

Cupping is one of the oldest methods of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is a method of applying acupressure by creating a vacuum on the patient's skin to dispel stagnation. Cupping can be used on back, neck, shoulder and other musculoskeletal conditions. It is used to treat a wide range of medical conditions such as : rheumatic diseases (arthritic joint and muscular conditions), blood disorders (anemia, haemophilia), skin problems (eczema, acne), fertility and gynaecological disorders.

Archaeologists have found evidence in China of cupping dating back to 1,000 B.C. In ancient Greece, Hippocrates (c. 400 B.C.) used cupping for internal disease and structural problems. This method in multiple forms spread into medicine throughout Asian and European civilizations

What types of Cupping are there?

In addition to "dry" cupping, the traditional form of cupping described above, some practitioners also use "wet" or "air" cupping.

In "wet" cupping, the skin is punctured before treatment. When the cup is applied and the skin is drawn up, a small amount of blood may flow from the puncture site, which is believed to help remove harmful substances and toxins from the body.

In "air" cupping, instead of using a flame to heat the cup, the cup is applied to the skin, and a suction pump is attached to the rounded end of the jar. The pump is then used to create the vacuum.

How does Cupping work?

In a typical cupping session, glass cups are warmed using a cotton ball or other flammable substances, which is soaked in alcohol, then placed inside the cup. Burning a substance in the cup can remove all the oxygen, which creates a vacuum and enables the cup to suck the skin, pulling in soft tissue, and drawing blood to that area.

Cupping works by pulling toxins from the muscle into the connective tissue just beneath the skin, where the lymphatic system can purify the muscle effectively.

Is Cupping safe? Does it hurt?

Cupping is very safe when done properly and works for almost everyone. Especially air cupping is considered relatively safe. As the skin under a cup is drawn up, the blood vessels at the surface of the skin will expand, which results in small, circular bruises on the areas where the cups were applied. These bruises are usually painless and disappear within a few days of treatment.

●Moreover, patients with high fever or convulsions; patients with inflamed skin; and people who bleed easily, are not advised to take cupping. Pregnant women should not have cupping on their stomach or lower back.

What are the three taboos about cupping?

● The repeated cupping on the same position

After being ill, many patients do the repeated cupping on the same position, which can cause skin damage, such as red and swollen.

● Taking a shower as soon as the cupping is finished

Many people think that it is comfortable to take a shower as soon as the cupping is finished, actually, it is not right. That is because the skin pores is still in open state, taking a shower at this time is easy to cause skin damage and skin inflammation and people get cold. We suggest people take a shower within 1-2 hours after cupping is done.

● The longer the better

Some people think that the longer cupping time is, the better treatment effect is. As a matter of fact, if the cupping time is too long, blister may appear, which not only damages the skin, also has a possibility to cause skin infections.

The right cupping time should be 10-15 minutes.
