2014-08-03 01:52

Causes of Leg Cramps at End of DialysisLeg cramps are a common complication at end of dialysis treatment, occurring in 33-36 percent of patients; they often result in the early termination of a hemodialysis session and therefore a significant cause of underdialysis. The exact etiology of cramps in dialysis patients is unknown. Since cramps tend to occur most frequently near the end of hemodialysis treatments, changes in plasma osmolality and/or extracellular fluid volume have been implicated.

Why my leg cramps at end of dialysis?

1. Poor blood circulation: Muscle cramp mainly occurs on the shank and feet, and it can also affect upper limbs and abdomen. The possible reasons are lack of oxygen in the tissues and inadequate circulating blood volume.

2. Vitamin D deficiency: What’s more, damaged kidneys cannot produce activated vitamin D, which is very important for the absorption of calcium. Lack of calcium lead to leg cramps.

3. Dehydration: Dialysis is a way to eliminate the extra water in body. But if dehydrate too much, low blood pressure and muscle ischemia will happen.

4. Low-sodium dialyzate: You should not dialysis with the dialyzate whose concentration is less than 135Eq/L.
