What Causes High Phosphorous Level in Dialysis Patient
Kidney Failure patients are always required to take dialysis. Yet, this helpful method cannot solve the underlying problem, resulting in some side effects. What causes high phosphorous level in dialysis patients?
How does high phosphorous level occur?
Kidney Failure patients is characterized by glomerular filtration rate (GFR) below 15 ml/min. In fact, when GFR level reduces to 60 ml/min, the kidneys have difficulty in removing extra phosphorous adequately. When patients start dialysis, they have decreased urine output and high protein intake. As a result, they have a higher risk of experiencing hyperphosphatemia (high serum phosphorous level).
How serious is high serum phosphorous level?
hyperphosphatemia happens on about 57.4% hemodialysis patients have, and 47.4 % peritoneal dialysis patients. However, only 38.5 % of them can control it under normal level. The safe level of serum phosphorous level for dialysis patients is 1.12-1.78 mmol/L.
High phosphorous level in the blood may lead to bone disease, cardiac valves, vascular calcification and itchy skin, etc. Those who have phosphorous level higher than 1.78 mmol/L may be fatal.

How to decrease high phosphorous level during dialysis?
● Control phosphorous intake in diet. The recommendation is 800-1000 mg/d. Since organic phosphorous may bind to protein, some food rich in protein should be limited.
● Take more times of dialysis or extend the time of dialysis. This is helpful for removing more phosphorous.
● Use phosphate binder. This is to help the body absorb phosphorous through gastrointestinal tract.
● Improve kidney function. This is the key to solving this problem from the root. As long as the kidney can work effectively, all symptoms can be relieved completely. For that reason, you can leave a message below to get some suggestions from our nephrologists.
