How to Manage Fluid Restriction for Dialysis Patients

How to Manage Fluid Restriction for Dialysis PatientsUnlike healthy kidneys that work 24 hours one day, dialysis especially hemodialysis is usually done three times a week to remove a part of waste products and excessive water from the body. To make patients feel comfortable before, during and after dialysis, fluid restriction should be managed very well.

Why is fluid control necessary for dialysis patients?

According to American Kidney Foundation, kidney disease patients are recommended to begin dialysis when their kidney function declines to 15% or less. With so low kidney function, dialysis is used to help damaged kidneys get rid of excess fluid and waste in the body, but it can’t be as effective as healthy kidney.

Since patients usually get dialysis treatment three times one week, more and more fluid builds up in the body between dialysis sessions. If these patients don’t limit the fluid intake, too much fluid retention can easily cause swelling, high blood pressure, heart problems, shortness problems, etc. Therefore, to manage fluid restriction is quite essential for dialysis patients.

How to achieve this goal?

To help patients on dialysis manage their fluid intake easily and efficiently, we give the following suggestions.

● Keep yourself from thirst: Salty and spicy foods can make you thirsty and have a desire to drink water. Therefore, dietitian at PKD Clinic recommends dialysis patients to limit the amount of salty and spicy foods.

● Stay cool: Drinking cold liquids is a good way to reduce your thirst especially in warm weather.

● Take your medications during your meal, if permitted: Try to swallow pills with soup or applesauce rather than fluid with the permission of doctors.

● Prevent dry mouth: Using mouthwash, brushing your teeth or sucking on a wedge of lemon is able to help you get rid of dry mouth, thus limiting the fluid intake to some extent.

The above methods indeed can help dialysis patients manage fluid restriction, but they can’t solve patients’ healthy problems radically. If you are one dialysis patient and want to have a better healthy condition, improving your kidney function is the best choice. As long as your kidney can work by itself, it is possible for you to live without dialysis and fluid limitation.
