What Causes Severe Skin Itching (Pruritus) in DialysisSkin itching is a common complaint of people on dialysis, and most often, the incidence of itching increases with time. To help dialysis patients ease their pruritus, we should first make clear what causes severe skin itching in dialysis.

Some dialysis patients experience this skin problem all the time, while some others say they have skin itching at some point. If you are one among them, please take it seriously, because itchy skin can reveal some underlying conditions.

1. Imbalance of calcium and phosphorus

Healthy kidney is able to keep the balance of calcium and phosphorus. However, this balance is easily ruined by dialysis. In this condition, serum phosphorus level gets higher easily because dialysis can’t help damaged kidney to get rod of phosphorus adequately.

2. High parathyroid hormone (PTH)

Low calcium level occurs easily along with high phosphorus and makes parathyroid gland secrete more PTH. However, high PTH level is more likely to lead certain cells in the skin to multiply rapidly. As a result, these cells will cause skin itching through releasing histamine.

3. Uremic waste products and toxins

Generally, doctors won’t suggest dialysis for kidney patients until their kidney function is lower than 15% or less. Even though dialysis can help remove small molecular waste products, toxins and water from the body, a part of uremic toxins still build up in the blood, resulting in skin itching.

4. Allergies

In some cases, itchy skin is due to allergies, especially when the itching appears at the beginning of dialysis. Blood tubing, dialyzer, one type of heparin or other elements may be the underlying causes.

Besides, high vitamin A and magnesium level may also be cause for skin itching in dialysis. Since so many conditions can lead to this problem, making an accurate diagnosis is essential before taking any treatment. If your itching is caused by high phosphorus level, avoid those foods rich in phosphorus to keep your phosphorus level below 5.5. Different causes need different managements. Therefore, you can describe your illness condition to the online doctor, so they can give you some relieving methods timely.
