Is Strenuous Exercise Bad for Polycystic Kidney Disease PatientsIs strenuous exercise bad for Polycystic Kidney Disease patients? In recently years, more and more people especially young boys love to play basketball, football and some other strenuous sports. Among them, some are diagnosed with PKD. Should they stop their interests?

As we know PKD is quite different from other kidney disease, because numerous fluid-filled cysts develop commonly in both kidneys. As more and more sac fluid fill into these cysts, patients’ kidneys will become large. Well then, any blow to the enlarged kidneys is more likely to cause further damage including ruptured cysts and high blood pressure. If this happens, it may threaten patients’ life.

Basketball, football and some other exercises are all very quickly and strenuous. Doing any of them can make patients get hurt on the abdomen easily. Therefore, they are recommended to avoid the above exercises.

Does this mean patients with PKD should avoid all exercise? Of course not. Moderate gentle exercise is able to help control patients’ blood pressure and boost their immune system, while having a rest at home all the time may easily aggravate patients’ healthy problems for example lack of vitamin D and energy, and mental diseases.

Once my one friend who also has PKD said to me that he has insisted to do Tai Chi for many years, and this exercise helps him to fight against many complications caused by PKD largely. Now, we can know moderate gentle exercise rather than strenuous exercise is good for PKD patients.

What exercises are suggested for these people? Both the National Kidney Foundation and the PKD Foundation recommend jogging, walking, swimming, golfing, rowing and biking for PKD patients. What’s more, some traditional eastern sports are also suitable for them: Tai Chi and Qigong.

Additionally, many suggestions during the exercise are worth noticing. For example, you should drink enough water to prevent dehydration when exercising, because polycystic kidneys have trouble retaining water. For more information about these attentions, you can consult online for free.
