High Blood Pressure in PKD When PregnantPolycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is a cystic genetic disorder of the kidneys. The cysts is progressive and when they are growing to a certain size or even rupture, they will cause many complications like hypertension, back pain, urinary tract infection, proteinuria and hematuria, etc. High blood pressure in PKD is common for patients, especially for those who are pregnant. This article is to give you an understanding of how pregnancy affects blood pressure in PKD, and also provide some suggestions to lower high blood pressure.

How does pregnancy affect blood pressure in PKD?

Many surveys have proven that pregnancy can cause high blood pressure in PKD. About 70%-75% of them suffer from hypertension. The causes of high blood pressure are not clear, and high tension in uterus, excessive amniotic fluids, lack of calcium are all the factors that may elevate the blood pressure. Besides, pregnant women who have PKD have a higher risk of high blood pressure. Some weather changes also increase the risk, especially for those who have low immunity.

Normally, hypertension occurs after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Women who have slightly elevated blood pressure may have mild dizziness, swelling or proteinuria, while those who have severer hypertension may have headache, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, persistent pain in upper right abdomen and even coma and cramps.

How to lower high blood pressure in PKD with pregnancy?

Controlling blood pressure is the most important thing. Firstly, all women with PKD, particularly those who also have high blood pressure, should be followed closely during their pregnancy by their doctors. They should ensure enough rest and keep a diet with low salt and low protein if they have swelling. If they have no symptoms, they should be given enough protein and calories as they have low immunity. What’s more, they should be very cautious about the medicines used, such as hypertensive drugs and diuretics. Any changes should be under the guidance of the doctor.
