Management of Leg Pain in Kidney Failure

Question: My mother had kidney failure three years ago, and then she began to take dialysis. She barely leaves the bed, and has much weight loss because of a poor appetite and poor sleep quality. Now she feels leg pain every day, and the pain spreads the whole leg when on dialysis. I am so worried about that. Could you please give me some suggestions. Thank you!

Answer: Don’t worry. I am very glad to help your mother relieve the leg pain. It is a common symptom of kidney failure. It happens usually because of a decreased calcium level in blood, lowering than the normal range (2.25-2.75mmol/L). In clinic, this condition is called Renal Osteopathy, which is the result of kidney function loss. When the kidneys are damaged, they cannot keep the fluid and electrolyte balance. Therefore, many calcium will leak out from the body. You can let your mother have a blood test to check the calcium level. If the calcium level is less than the normal range, it is time to give your mother some calcium supplements.

However, if the calcium level in blood is normal, the leg pain can be the result of nerve damage. Under this condition, muscle cramps are always accompanied with pain. At this time, some home remedies will help. You can apply a hot towel on the leg, and then change it for a cold one. Massaging or stretching leg muscles when leg pain occurs. She can make some mild stretching movements under the doctor’s help. Any questions, you can email to kidneyservice@hotmail.com. I hope your mother will go better soon.
