Complications of Kidney Cyst

My mother is having a simple cortical cyst measuring 46x42mm in the mid-pole of the kidney. Is there any complication?

The Doctor Answered:

Complications of Kidney CystThank you for your inquiry. I would like to explain to you about the possible complication of kidney cyst.

Kidney cyst is a fluid-filled sac that can be found in one or both kidneys. The cyst is progressive with age. It has two type: simple kidney cyst and complex kidney cyst. In general, simple kidney cyst is asymptomatic and non-cancerous. However, when simple cyst grows to a large size (more than 2cm), it may cause some symptoms like back pain, flank pain, abdominal pain, high blood pressure, nausea, vomiting or protein in the urine. When the cyst gets infected, it may also lead to urinary tract infection, chills, fever, or blood in the urine. In some cases, even if the cyst is less than 2cm, it brings some discomforts to the patients.

As for you mother’s case, a 46x42mm simple kidney cysts is not so serious. No treatment is needed unless it cause some some symptoms like the above listed. However, there still are something your mother should be concerned, especially her diet. People with kidney cyst are always recommended to avoid spicy and greasy foods, like chili, curry, mustard, fried foods, seafood, alcohol, tobacco, etc. In addition, salty foods are also bad for them. In addition, patients should prevent themselves from getting cold, because it is easy to make the cyst infected.
