What Causes Enlarged Kidney in Kids

My 5-year-old daughter had a lot of urinary tract infections, so doctor suggested us to do an ultrasound. The results show one kidney is enlarged and there is debris in her bladder. We want to know what causes enlarged in kids.

The Doctor Answered:

What Causes Enlarged Kidney in KidsYour daughter’s urinary tract infection must have a close link with her enlarged kidney. Enlarged kidneys in kids are less common than that in adults, but many reasons can cause this healthy problem in children.

- Polycystic Kidney Disease: PKD, an inherited kidney disease, is divided into ADPKD and ARPKD. Since your daughter’s kidney enlarges so early, it may be ARPKD.

- Acute pyelonephritis: It is an infection of kidneys and usually due to urinary tract infection or bloodstream infection.

- Hydronephrosis: It can lead to a back flow of urine and then enlarged kidney.

- Kidney cancer: It commonly only affects one kidney and makes this kidney appear enlarged on ultrasound.

Some other causes may also lead to enlarged kidney in kids. Most of these causes life-threatening if left treated. Finding out the root cause and then accepting effective treatment is the best way to keep these children’s condition from worsening. Send your kid’s illness condition to, and we are glad to help you find the underlying causes and the effective treatments.
