Can Caffeine Cause High Creatinine Level

My father has kidney disease and his creatinine level is 5.7. You can’t image how my father like to drink coffee, but doctor recommends to quit it. Can coffee or caffeine cause high creatinine level?

The Doctor Answered:

Can Caffeine Cause High Creatinine LevelCaffeine is found easily in most energy drinks such as coffee, cola, tea and chi. At present, no research has shown the relationship between caffeine and high creatinine levels, but drinks which contain caffeine may be something your father need to avoid.

This is because caffeine can be decomposed by liver and produce some metabolism wastes including paraxanthine, theobromine and theophylline, all of which can increase the burden on kidneys. Since your father has had kidney disease and his creatinine level has risen to 5.6, long-term intake of caffeine can cause further damage to kidney, liver and stomach.

From the above analysis, we can know even though caffeine may not cause high creatinine level directly, it does cause some side effects for people with high creatinine level. On contrary, some drinks can help lower high creatinine level like cranberry juice. Remember that choosing healthy drinks is good for your overall health. If any confusion, feel free to let me know.
