The Doctor Answered:

PKD Treatment, PKD PrognosisSorry to hear you are suffering from Polycystic Kidney Disease, but I am glad to tell you that you have chance to give birth to a healthy baby. Is your fiance a PKD patient or not? If he is healthy, then you have 50% chance to give birth to a healthy baby. However, if he is a Polycystic Kidney Disease patient too, then you have 25% chance to have a healthy baby. Prenatal diagnosis will help you know whether the baby has PKD or not. Thought it violates the ethics moral, it is good for the parents and child.

Besides, how is your illness condition now? Pregnancy will make our body produce much more toxins and thus increase kidney burden. Therefore, if your illness condition is not stable now, I do not recommend you to be pregnant. PKD is a kidney disorder that related with gene mutation. It can not be treatmentd, but can be controlled well. Therefore, I suggest you to improve your physical condition and illness condition firstly and this will help you avoid worsening of PKD during pregnancy.

Lastly, in many cases, PKD patients are prescribe with oral medicines to deal with control their symptoms. It is helpful for slowing down the progression of Polycystic Kidney Disease, but it is far from enough. To get PKD controlled well, patients also need to stop the increase the enlarging of the cyst. Only when cyst in kidney stops enlarging and increasing, can further kidney damages be avoided and also can PKD be controlled well.
