Will My Kidney Cyst Develop Kidney Cancer

Q: I was diagnosed with kidney cyst recently. Someone told me that kidney cyst can be cancerous, which makes afraid and worried day and night. Can anyone tell me will my kidney cyst develop kidney cancer? Anyone can help will be appreciated.

The Doctor Answered:

Kidney cyst is a relatively common kidney disease. According to the research, for people aged 50~70 years, 15% of men and 7% of women are suffering from kidney cyst. Will kidney cyst develop into kidney cancer?

Compared with simple kidney cyst, the complex cysts on kidneys are more likely to develop kidney cancer. If your doctor said it's 90% likely to be cancer, then it's probably a mass or a tumor.

To diagnosed whether your kidney cyst is cancerous or not, you are suggested to take further tests. Normally your doctor would suggest you to do a CT scan with contrast next to get a good look at it. And based on your own condition, specific tests will be necessary to make a final diagnosis. You can email your medical condition to for the recommended test list.

Also, if the cysts are cancerous, you have to distinguish whether it is benign or not. The benign one can be treatmentd by Chinese Herbal Medicine, but the cancerous cyst is hardly to be reversed.
