Some people find they have big belly that may indicate enlarged kidneys. A number of reasons can cause enlarged kidneys, from PKD, kidney cyst and kidney infections to kidney cancer, hydronephrosis, kidney stones, etc. Since enlarged kidney is one sign of kidney damage, a healthy diet that can reduce the workload on kidneys is needed.

How to develop a correct enlarged kidney diet?

Generally, when kidneys are damaged, patients need to follow several dietary requirements, including:

1. Take in correct amount of protein

When kidneys are damaged, additional protein intake will increase the burden on kidneys and may lead to further damage to kidney filters. If patients’ kidney function is still more than 60%, they are recommended to control their protein intake to 0.8mg/kg every day. If it is less than 60%, they should reduce their protein intake according to their condition.

2. Drink enough water

Since enlarged kidneys may be associated with kidney infection or hydronephrosis, drinking enough water can help cleanse urinary tract and manage infections. However, if urine output reduces, these patients have to correct their water intake.

3. Avoid oxalate-containing foods

When kidneys can’t do their work normally, extra oxalate will build up in the blood to increase the risk of kidney stone. Therefore, it is a must to avoid high-oxalate foods such as Spinach, beans, grapes and cocoa.

4. Eat more fruits and vegetables and less meat

Kidney patients are often suggested to eat more fruits and vegetables but less meat. This can help provide enough nutritions for the body. However, not all vegetables and fruits are suitable for people with enlarged kidneys, so it is necessary for them to choose correct fruits and vegetables to eat.
