Food to Be Avoided With Polycystic Kidney DiseaseEvery disease has its food restrictions, and Polycystic kidney disease is no exception. Patients should be very cautious about what they eat and drink. In this article, I will share with you some foods that should be avoided with Polycystic Kidney Disease.

1. Avoid taking too much quantity of protein

The most important thing that PKD patients should remember is to take foods that are low in low-quality protein. Patients should eat less animal meats that contain high level of fat. In addition, plants that contain rich protein like beans, bean products and tofu. Those who have kidney function insufficiency should pay more attention to these kind of foods. Much protein intake will produce more creatinine and BUN (blood urea nitrogen), which are discharged by kidneys as wastes. Therefore, low quantity protein intake will reduce the burden on kidneys. However, high-quality protein is good for PKD patients. Egg white, lean meat, milk are known as the good choices.

2. Limited salt intake

As PKD patients cannot remove excessive fluids and cannot keep the electrolyte balance, some of them have water-sodium retention, which can cause swelling or hypertension. In this case, patients are required to limit their salt intake. However, not everyone has this restriction. Sodium intake depends on their condition.

3. Spicy foods are forbidden

Peppers, alcohol, smoking, chocolate, coffee, seafoods and so on.

4. Foods containing high potassium are selectly chosen

Many fruits have a high level of potassium especially oranges, bananas, and persimmon, etc. PKD should have blood test to check the potassium and phosphorous level to decide the specific dietary items.

This is general guidance for PKD patients, and the diet should be changed according the different conditions.
