Is Too Much Iron Bad for Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD)Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is a genetic disorder that is characterized by a cluster of cysts on the kidneys. The cysts will cause kidney damage. Iron deficiency is the most common cause of Anemia in Polycystic Kidney Disease. This condition can be corrected by intravenous iron administration or oral iron supplementation. However, if you take too much iron, you may experience some side effects.

► Oral iron therapy

Oral iron is best absorbed if given without food. Side-effects of oral iron therapy include constipation, diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal pain.

In the treatment of iron deficiency with ferrous sulphate, the usual adult dose is one 300 mg tablet (containing 60 mg elemental iron) three to four times daily. The pediatric dose is 2–6 mg/kg per day of elemental iron in 2–3 divided doses.

► Intravenous iron therapy

Intravenous iron can be given safely to PKD patients as long as the therapy is performed according to international recommendations and guidelines. This therapy is unequivocally superior to oral iron supplementation. All forms of intravenous iron may be associated with acute adverse events. Potential risk factors include acute allergic reactions such as rash, breathing problem, or wheezing.

To sum up, too much iron is bad for Polycystic Kidney Disease. Excess is just as bad as deficiency, so you should take iron under your doctor’s advice.
