Why Should I Drink Less Water in Polycystic Kidney DiseasePolycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is a condition where a cluster of cysts form in both kidneys. When the cysts cause kidney damage, they are told to require a restricted diet.

Why should I drink less water in Polycystic Kidney Disease?

Since kidneys fail, excessive fluid build up in the body, leading to swelling or edema. If you drink too much water, more fluid will accumulate. If your lungs, livers, or other organs are also surrounded with fluid, that will be life-threatening. Therefore, you should drink less water with Polycystic Kidney Disease.

What other dietary suggestions for me?

1. Avoid salty foods

Processed meat, canned soups, dried vegetables and fast foods are high in sodium, which can aggravate swelling and may lead to high blood pressure, as well.

2. Control protein intake

In the early stage of Polycystic Kidney Disease, patients are required to take less protein. Protein will produce wastes after breaking down in the body. The wastes can burden the kidneys and cause further renal damage. Therefore, they are recommended to tale controlled protein.

3. Forbid eating spicy and greasy foods

Spicy and greasy foods will stimulate the growth of renal cysts. Chili, mustard, peppers, curry, alcohol and caffeine are bad for you health, and you’d better stay away from these foods.

What foods are recommended for me?

Vegetables that contain rich vitamins, carbohydrates, minerals, and fibers are good choices for you. You can take cabbages, lettuce, biter gourd, raw onions, cauliflowers, cucumbers, etc.

Some berries like strawberry, cranberry, blackberry, blueberry are known as the super fruit for Polycystic Kidney Disease patients because of its rich antioxidants.
