Does Alcohol Interfere With BUNQuitting or reducing alcohol is always recommended for kidney disease patient. Why? Does alcohol interfere with BUN (blood urea nitrogen)?

What is BUN?

As mentioned above, BUN refers to the urea nitrogen level in the blood. Urea is the by-product of protein, and contains a high level of nitrogen. This substance forms in the liver and is discharged by the kidneys.

Does alcohol interfere with BUN?

Yes, abuse of alcohol will affect the BUN level. However, taking alcohol won’t increase BUN directly but interfere with this level by burdening the kidneys.

How to control BUN level within normal range?

The normal range of BUN is 7 to 20 mg/dL in adults. To make BUN within normal range, you should take methods according to the real causes. In general, you can follow the listed ways:

● Drink plenty of fluid if you can still urine normally. This is to keep your body hydrated to prevent from dehydration. If you are taking diuretic medications, have persistent diarrhea, lose excess fluids through sweat or do not drink enough fluids throughout the day, you may become dehydrated. Consult your doctor for the exact amounts of fluids based on your health state.

● Eat a low protein diet. If your kidneys are unable to filter protein adequately, reduce your protein intake is helpful for lowering BUN levels. High protein foods include red meat, poultry, beans, nuts and grains with moderate amounts of protein.

● Control your blood pressure. High blood pressure should be well controlled to protect your kidney function. Get a blood pressure check and monitor it regularly. Meanwhile, maintain a low sodium diet is helpful.

Last but not the least, high BUN might has serious underlying disease such as kidney disease, and liver disease. You’d better take a urine or blood test to diagnose.
