Diet is very important at this stage since the kidneys cannot remove the metabolic wastes adequately.

Fluid. Since the damaged kidneys cannot remove wastes normally, excess fluid accumulates in the body and causes swelling in the limbs or ankles. You have to reduce fluid intake.

In peritoneal dialysis, the excess fluid will be removed and may make patients feel dehydrated. Then, they are required to increase fluid intake. Hemodialysis may require more strict fluid modification.

The amount of fluid that you can take depends on the treatment, urine output and your body weight. You dietitian and doctor will help you calculate it.

Sodium. You need to limit your sodium intake to 2 grams each day. Processed meats, pickles, canned vegetables and fast foods should be avoided.

Protein. You may have had to limit you protein intake because your kidneys are less able to clear the wastes produced after protein breaks down. Once you start dialysis, you may need to increase protein intake. Half of the intake should be high-quality protein resources, such as egg white, lean meat, fish and milk.

► Minerals. Potassium and phosphorous should be limited. High potassium levels may cause abnormal heart rate. Bananas, avocados, kiwis, and dried fruits should be avoided. High phosphorous inhibit the absorption of calcium, leading to bone problems. Some dairy products, nuts and peanut butter should be limited.

Vitamins and calories

Calories are necessary for ESRD patients who experience weight loss. Vegetable oils such as safflower oil and olive oil can be used on rich, noodles and breads.

You are suggested to get vitamins from fresh vegetables and fruits such as red bell peppers, cabbages, cauliflower, cranberry, and pomegranate, etc. You can also consult doctors to take some vitamin supplements. One more thing you should remember is that diet should not be cosidered as medications, and you need a holistic treatment to prolong your life.
