Can I Eat Baked Shrimp on Dialysis

Dialysis is a effective life-saving method for ESRD patients. Diet in dialysis is very important since the severely damaged kidneys have failed to remove wastes adequately. Well them, can dialysis patients eat baked shrimp?

Baked shrimps for dialysis patients

I can you tell you exactly that baked shrimp is not recommended to be eaten, because it is rich in phosphorous (greater than 160 mg per serving). Some fish and seafood are also rich in phosphorous. For more information, please email to pkdclinic888@hotmail.com or leave a message below. We will give you some guidance for free.

Symptoms of high blood phosphorous level

The normal range for phosphorous is 2.5-4.5 mg/dL. If patients on dialysis have abnormal high level of phosphorous in the blood, they are likely to have itchy skin, muscle weakness and poor appetite, etc. Someone may have no symptoms unless patients see elevated serum phosphorous levels in the blood.

Therefore, baked shrimps are not allowed to be taken.

Dialysis diet suggestions

● Limit sodium intake in diet. Reduce sodium to less than 2 grams.

● Control protein: In general, the recommended amount of protein is 1.2 grams for patients with GFR (glomerular filtration rate) below 20 ml/min. Protein resources should be of high-quality.

● Fluid intake: Fluid intake should be taken moderately. You may need to increase urine output if dialysis remove too much fluid which making you feel dehydrated. Yet, you may have to reduce fluid intake if you have swelling in or after dialysis. Specific recommended fluid intake should be calculated by your doctor or dietitian, according to you urine output and body weight.
