Salty foods

Healthy kidneys play a role in maintaining sodium balance in the blood. Abnormal sodium may lead to swelling or high blood pressure. Therefore, salty foods including processed meat, canned soups, frozen dinner and fast foods, soy sauce, ketchup and anything that has the world’s “sodium added” on the label.


In different stages of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), patients may need different portion of protein in food. In the stage 1-3 CKD, patients need to control protein-rich foods like cheese, some dairy products, cream, fish, chicken, red beef and beans, etc. But in Stage 4 to 5 CKD, patients may need to supply themselves with high-quality protein such as egg white, lean meat and milk.

High oxalate food

Limiting foods high in oxalic acid is to avoid developing kidney stones. These foods include instant coffee, tea, concord grapes, tofu, beets peanuts, oranges, sweet potatoes, beans, chocolate, dark leafy green vegetables and draft beer.

Potassium and Phosphorous

High potassium may cause shortness of breath, nausea and muscle pain, and high phosphorous blocks the absorption of calcium. Therefore, foods high in potassium and phosphorous need to be limited. Cut back on cocoa, nuts, chocolate, carbonated drinks and vegetables.
