Can I Have Red Meats With PKDWhen talking about foods that should be avoided by kidney disease patients, red meats are usually mentioned. For PKD patients especially when their renal functions have been severely damaged, red meats such as beef, mutton should be avoided.

The following are reasons for this diet restriction.

Red meat consumption can further increase high creatinine levels in the blood. We know that creatinine comes from the metabolism of muscle masses and meat products that we eat. Therefore PKD patients with high creatinine should limit or avoid eating too much meats especially red meats.

Red meat can further increase high BUN levels because meats contain a lot of proteins. PKD patients should limit protein intake because protein decomposition can produce urea nitrogen and other nitrogenous wastes which will increase burdens to the kidneys and worsen renal damages.

Red meat products are usually high-fatty which is not good for the control of blood pressure and blood cholesterol. High blood pressure and high blood lipid can increase the risk of cardiovascular complications and aneurysms which are the major risks factors that can threaten the patient’s life, therefore it is very important for PKD patients to avoid too much intake of fats.

How to prepare red meats so that PKD patients can have small amount?

It is better that PKD patients should avoid red meat, but small amount is okay. If red meats are cooked in a healthy way, PKD patients can have some small amount of red meats. So what is the healthy cooking way for PKD patients? The general principle is low-salt, low-fat and moderate amount. Choose lean meat instead of meat fats. Add less salt while cooking red meats and to increase the flavor of the dish, lemon juices, onion and some herbal seasonings can be added. It is advised that less oil is put while cooking red meat products and plant oil is preferred than animal oil. Flaxseed oil, corn oil are all good choice. It has also been found that flaxseed oil can help ease symptoms and slow down the illness progression of PKD.
