What Type Of Food Is Bad For PKD PatientWhat type of food is bad for PKD patient? When kidney is affected, some foods should be avoided, as they have bad effects on kidneys. Proper diet helps to slow down illness progression, which plays a crucial role in delay or prevent dialysis and kidney transplant. For this reason, knowing what type of food is bad is very important for PKD patients.

For an individual with PKD, what he can eat and can not eat depend on his illness condition very much. There is no specific food lists that are good or bad for all the PKD patients due to the difference of illness condition, but diet for PKD patients generally follow on these principles:

1. Low-protein diet

Although protein is a must for a healthy body, PKD patients need to have low-protein diet, as high protein intake will increase kidney burden and aggravate proteinuria, which is extremely bad for PKD patients. For PKD patients, they need to ingest different amount of protein everyday according to their illness condition and also 60% of the protein they eat every day should be high quality protein and this will help to reduce kidney burden. In our daily life, foods like lean meat, milk, egg white and fish are all good source of protein.

2. Low potassium foods

In early stage of PKD, high potassium foods like banana and spinage are usually needed by patients, as these foods can help to prevent elevation of blood pressure. However, when illness condition progresses to a certain stage and potassium level in blood becomes higher than the normal range, PKD patients need to stay far away from these high potassium foods.

3. Low-sat diet

Foods high in salt like bacon, soy sauce, pickled foods and some snaked foods are also bad for PKD patients due to the abundant sodium. Affected kidneys can not discharge excessive sodium in the body. Elevated sodium in the blood will trigger high blood pressure which is not beneficial for PKD patients to control their illness condition. For this reason, it is necessary for patients to follow a low salt diet.

4. Low phosphorus diet

PKD usually causes no elevation of phosphorus level in blood, but if not controlled effectively, it will progress to advanced stage. At that time, high phosphorus level occurs easily. With elevated phosphorus level in blood, foods like cheese, toasted wheat germ, nuts, sesame seeds, roasted soybeans, bacon and bran should be avoided, at least limited, as they can cause further elevation of phosphorus level.
