About one-half of PKD patients will end up with kidney failure, yet there is no treatment for it. On the other hand, diet has the function of improving overall health and even may prevent the deterioration of PKD patient. A well planned diet can preserve overall health for longer, and can delay dialysis to PKD patient, or even avoid it.

If you carry the polycystic kidney disease gene, it is better for you to start a right diet as early as possible. Starting a right diet in early time is one of the most effective way to preserve kidney function for PKD patient, and here are some tips:

Limit excess protein intake

After breaking down by liver, protein can produce a kind of waste called urea, then it is excreted by kidney. Too much intake of protein means gaining the workload of kidney, so PKD patent should have a low-protein diet. The recommended value is 0.8g/kg of protein intake one daily if patients still have normal kidney function. Plant protein is recommended, because it can lower blood pressure and slow the growth of renal cyst.

Reduce excess amount of salt

Sodium can cause high blood pressure, which can aggravate kidney disease. Avoid food with excess sodium, such as pickled food and processed food.

Have food with omega-3 fatty acids

Study has showed that omega-3 fatty acids can help reduce inflammation and slow the progression of PKD. So foods contained with plenty of omega-3 fatty acids are needed, such as flaxseed, linseed, walnuts and pecans.

Eat high-fiber food

Fiber can reduce insulin, and high insulin level is linked with heart disease and the progression of PKD. So foods contained with abundant fiber are recommended, like fruit, vegetables, grains and legumes.

Beside foods recommended above, PKD patients should also remember to drink enough water, don’t drink alcohol, and avoid caffeine, which can be found in coffee, chocolate, cola, black tea, white yea, and green tea, etc.
