Causes

Kidney is one important organ that has the function of filtering wastes, regulating blood pressure, maintaining water and electrolyte balance, producing EPO and activating vitamin D. Both creatinine and urea are the wastes that are filtered by kidneys. The filtrating units, namely glomeruli, are damaged, causing these wastes to building up inside the kidneys.

In some cases, some minerals such as potassium, phosphorous and even calcium cannot be removed by kidneys adequately, thus leading to abnormal levels of these minerals.

Creatinine: 0.5-1.1mg//dL for females and 0.6-1.2mg/dL for males

Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN): 6-20 mg/dL or 1.8-7.1 mmol/L

Blood potassium level: 3.5-5.0 milliEquivalents per liter (mEq/L). Potassium levels between 5.1 mEq/L to 6.0 mEq/L are considered to be mild hyperkalemia.
