Diet Plan To Lower High Creatinine Levels

2013-07-06 16:35

Diet Plan To Reduce Creatinine LevelHigh creatinine level is an indicator of low kidney function. As with blood urea nitrogen, creatinine is another waste product broken down from protein. Since food we eat is an important source of protein, it is quite necessary that patients make a healthy diet plan to lower high creatinine level.

General dietary principles

● Limit the intake of protein: Choose high-quality protein instead of high-quantity protein. It can not only meet your protein need but also reduce the workload on damaged kidneys. Besides, make sure how much protein your can take one daily.

● Develop a low-salt diet: When the kidneys are damaged severely, sodium is more likely to build up in the body, resulting in some problems like high blood pressure or even further kidney damage. Therefore, it is good to avoid salty foods in your meals.

● Drink correct amount of water: If you can still produce enough urine, drinking relatively more water can increase the urine output, so more waste products including creatinine can be removed from the body. However, if your kidneys can’t produce enough urine, control your fluid intake.

Special suggestions

Since high creatinine level is a result of low kidney function and the build up of protein decomposing products, the diet plan to lower high creatinine level had better contain two aspects: eating more foods that can improve your kidney function, and avoiding foods that can increase the waste products.

● Recommended foods: Some fruits and vegetables such as cranberry, blueberry, pomegranate, red bell peppers, cabbage, etc, can be used as natural antioxidants, so they can protect the kidneys from damaging and improve kidney function to some extent, thus lowering high creatinine level. However, not all vegetables and fruits can help lower high creatinine level.

● Avoided foods: Fat, dairy products, alcohol, beer, coffee, and many other foods can increase waste products in the body. If unlimited, these foods may raise your creatinine level largely.

The best diet plan should change from patient to patient. Besides the above suggestions, you may need other diet modifications. For example, if you are tested out high potassium level, you should avoid food high in potassium. Consult the doctor to make a scientific diet plan for yourself.
