What is Immunotherapy?

The therapy is medically defined as a biologic therapy as inducing, enhancing or suppressing an immune response. There are two major things would be done to deal with diseases by using Immunotherapy:

Stimulating one's own immune system to help fight against pathological factors in PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) patients

Providing certain components for your body to boost one's immunity

How many steps are there in this biologic therapy?

There are six major steps: immune diagnosis for PKD, immune clearance, immune blockage, immune tolerance, immune regulation and immune protection.

Why Immunotherapy can be used to treat PKD?

Before anything, we'd better take a quick glance at how Polycystic Kidney Disease attacks.

Everybody knows that Polycystic Kidney Disease is a kind of genetic disease that is passed down through family members. Its real pathogenesis is unclear till now, but some progresses have been got from the perspective of molecule and cell biology.

Two hit hypothesis

By pathoanatomy, we found out that only 1-5% of nephrons have cysts. Dr. Qian etc. posed a theory called two hit hypothesis in 1996. This study believed that heterozygote genotypes would not give rise to Polycystic Kidney Disease in patients with genetic PKD1, it only develops under the effect of acquired factors. Cell and growth factors also come into play during the development of Polycystic Kidney Disease. All of those are associated with one's immune system and their immunity, which explains why Immunotherapy is totally qualified for dealing with the disease.

How could the biologic therapy treat PKD?

Immune diagnosis

Comprehensive lab tests will be done to better diagnose the disease so as to pinpoint exact conditions or causes inducing one's onset.

To know better about how serious the damage is, in which part it impairs and what kind of immune reaction it is. Sometimes, drug concentration will be taken so as to supply evidence for further treatment. Lab tests could also indicate some kind of potential factors like TNT-hs, NTproBNP and D-dipolymer etc.

Major special lab tests include Tests for Renal damages, Tests for Uremia, Five Special Tests for Immunization, Lab Tests for Complement and Exams for T Lymphocytes Subgroup etc.

Immune clearance

Blood purification techniques will be adopted in this step. Hemodialysis, plasma exchange and some others are contained in those techniques. By taking blood purification techniques, pathogenic substances can be removed like inflammatory mediator; meanwhile, small, moderate and large molecular toxins will be eliminated from blood. What's the point of doing this? In order to create a favorable internal environment for further treatments in PKD patients.

Immune blockage

Stopping infections or other factors that may aggravate one's condition will be done in this step of immune blockage.

Immune tolerance

Take lab tests regularly for the PKD patients so as to find out problems as early as possible.

Immune regulation

The combos of western medicines and Chinese medicines will be adopted to treat Polycystic Kidney Disease. Chinese medicines work for removing blood stasis and stopping the cysts from growing.

Immune protection

Due to the weak immunity in PKD patients, their immune system will be boosted in order to prevent the relapse from attacking.
