Kidney Cysts Can Be Caused By Dialysis

2013-03-28 11:46

We know that dialysis can cause many side effects and complications such as low blood pressure, anemia, muscle twitching, seizure, etc. Another kidney problem that can be related to dialysis is cyst formation in the kidneys.

Some patients will find that they have several fluid-filled sacs in their kidneys in the renal imaging tests which were not there before they begin dialysis treatment. Such cysts in the kidneys are called acquired kidney cysts which is mainly caused by kidney failure or dialysis.

Acquired kidney cyst has nothing to do with age, but is related with the time of hemodialysis. It has been reported that most dialysis patients will have renal cysts after more than 3 years dialysis. Acquired kidney cysts often affect bilateral kidneys with at least 4 cysts in each kidneys. The diameter of these renal cysts are mostly 2-3cm and some cysts can even be inflamed or become cancerous. Therefore once acquired renal cysts are detected, early prevention and treatment should be sought. B ultrasound or CT scan can be taken as periodic checkup to see if there is necessity to receive proper treatment.

To prevent acquired kidney cysts, patients should pay more caution and have careful discussion with the doctor before beginning dialysis. In clinic creatinine level is often used as an indicator to begin dialysis which is actually not very scientific because there are many factors that need to be taken into account in regarding the initial dialysis. It is not good to start dialysis too late, but it is also not good to begin dialysis too early. If patients do not have obvious discomforts and other laboratory results are normal or if symptoms can be controlled with medicines, dialysis can be delayed. Usually when creatinine is higher than 8 and clearance rate of creatinine is below 5, dialysis will be required to sustain the patients’ life.
