Type of Edema Due to Renal FailureEdema, or swelling is a medical term for buildup of excessive fluids in the body’s tissue. This occur in Renal Failure patients because the severely damaged kidneys fail to excrete excessive fluid with urine.

Types of Edema

● Generalized Edema

This is the most serious type of edema. It refers to a condition when you notice swelling, puffiness, and waster retention in various body parts, including your eyes, face, abdomen, arms, legs, feet, and ankles.

● Skin Edema

Skin edema mainly occurs in the tissues and cells of the skin. It is usually harmless, but can be painful.

● Peripheral Edema

It mainly occurs in the legs, feet and ankles. This is the most common type of edema and it causes swelling in the lower extremities.

● Cerebral Edema

When fluids accumulate in the intracellular and extracellular spaces of the brain, it is called “Cerebral Edema”.

● Pulmonary Edema

Pulmonary edema is the accumulation of fluids in the lungs.

Cause of edema in Renal Failure

Water-sodium retention is the direct cause of edema. Impaired kidneys fail to main discharge excessive fluid and sodium, thus leading to these useless substances deposit in the body. As a result, patients see edema in many parts of the body.

In addition, some medicines used in Renal Failure patients for other problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, infection, pain, and so on can cause some adverse effects. Long term or large dosage of medicines can cause edema.

Treatment options for edema

No matter which type of edema in Renal Failure patients, the root cause of this symptom is the same. Treatment options can include:

● Regular exercise

● Reduce salt consumption

● Elevate legs while sleeping

● Avoid standing or sitting for extended hours

● Lose weight if required

● Wear support stockings

● Limit your alcohol, sugar, caffeine intake

The most important thing for treating edema in Renal Failure is to improve kidney function. As long as the kidneys can work as healthy ones, fluids and wastes can be discharged adequately, so that edema can disappear naturally. In that case, you may as well try traditional Chinese herbs.
