PKD & Kidney Cysts

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a group of disorders that result from the formation and progressive enlargement of cysts in the kidneys without dysplasia, usually leading to renal failure.

Genetic Testing for Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD)Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is genetic disorder. It has two types: ADPKD (Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease) and ARPKD (Autosomal Recessive Polycystic Kidney Disease). Genetic testing for Polycystic Kidney Disease is for those who have a family history of PKD who has no symptoms may consider being screened for the disease.

Genetic tests can also be done to screen for PKD1 or PKD2 mutations, although the use of genetic tests is limited by their cost and the test’s inability to make a diagnosis in 15 percent of cases. Genetic tests may be used for:

●A young adult with a family history of ADPKD and a negative ultrasound who is a potential kidney donor

●A person whose ADPKD diagnosis is not certain based upon imaging tests

●A person younger than 30 years of age with a family history of ADPKD and a negative ultrasound who is planning to start a family

Cyst formation in ADPKD may begin in the fetus. However, the disease does not usually cause symptoms in young children. Genetic testing can be done during pregnancy to determine if the baby is affected, although it is not recommended for several important reasons:

●The test may fail to identify ADPKD when it is present

●Some people with gene mutations will never develop symptoms of ADPKD

Treatments for Polycystic Kidney Disease

After the diagnosis, treatment should be proposed. Nowadays, treatment for Polycystic Kidney Disease is divided into two types: Medicines and Surgery.

●Medicines: Antibiotics and diuretics are always prescribed to the patients to fight against infections and relieve some symptoms such as back pain, flank pain, abdominal pain, swelling, high blood pressure, or proteinuria, etc.

However, over-the-counter drugs, while helpful, may also cause some side effects. Be cautious about the dosage when you plan to take these medicines.

●Surgery: Percutaneous Renal Cyst Aspiration and laparoscopic decortication are commonly applied for shrinking kidney cyst. Yet, they may lead to recurrence easily.

Recently, a new natural treatment for PKD has been innovated, called “Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy”. As words are limited here, I cannot explain this therapy to you. In that case, you can leave a message below or email to pkdclinic888@hotmail.com for more information.
