Is it possible for PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) only affect one kidney? PKD is a gene related kidney disorder and usually involves two kidneys. In some cases, cysts appear in one kidney firstly and then another kidney maybe several years later, so some patients have the doubt can PKD only affect one kidney.

PKD is a genetic kidney disorder that can cause formation of cysts in kidney. In clinic, there are different types of kidney cysts and one of them is multiple kidney cyst which is also characterized by lots of cysts in kidney. It may occur in one kidney or both two kidneys. Similar with cysts in PKD, cysts resulted from multiple kidney also can cause kidney damages and impair kidney function. Therefore, if any PKD patient found he has cysts in only one kidney, he needs to found out if his cysts are caused by PKD or resulted from multiple kidney cyst.

There are differences between PKD and multiple kidney cysts:

1. Most cases (90%) of PKD are inherited, which means it is passed down from generation to generation. Therefore, when an individual found he has cysts in only one kidney, he needs to learn if there is anyone else, especially elders, in his family has this diseases. This will help to confirm if his illness condition is inherited or not. Different from PKD, multiple kidney cyst can be genetic or acquired and also, patients usually have no relatives who has this kind of kidney problem.

2. Most of the time, cystic fluid in PKD is urine; however, in cases of multiple kidney cyst, cystic fluid is usually blood-like liquid which results from the present of red blood cells.

3. Compared with multiple kidney cyst, PKD causes complications like blood urine, high blood pressure, swelling and kidney failure easily. However, for multiple kidney cyst, no treatment is needed if the cysts are smaller and also cause no symptoms. In such a case, what patients need to do is to do ultrasound B regularly to know if the cysts are enlarging.

It is not common that PKD only affect one kidney, but in some cases, these cysts appear in one kidney firstly and then another kidney several years later. Therefore, it is necessary for patients who are told to have cysts in one to found out whether they are suffering from PKD or multiple kidney cyst.
