PKD no smokingCan PKD patients smoke? Some PKD patients once consult us about this question. Experts have pointed out that PKD patients should avoid smoking, therefore it is better to give up smoking as soon as possible if you have PKD for the sake of your health.

Why PKD patients can not smoke? This is because tobacco contains large amount of nicotine which is a toxin and it is very harmful to human health. It can cause vasoconstriction and worsen arteriosclerosis. This will further reduce blood supply to the kidneys, heart and other organs.

Smoking can make the high blood pressure hard to control. PKD patients often develop high blood pressure even when their kidney functions are normal. In the end stage of PKD nearly all patients will have elevated blood pressure. Smoking can further reduce blood flow to the kidneys and worsen renal ischemia and hypoxia. Poorly controlled high blood pressure can worsen PKD, therefore patients should avoid tobacco, alcohol, salty foods that can worsen high blood pressure so as to help slow down illness progression of PKD.

Smoking is easy to damages the lung and the upper respiratory tract and make the patients more susceptible to cold, respiratory tract infections and pulmonitis. These infections will in turn worsen renal damages.

So we can see that PKD patients should stay far away from tobacco. If you are smoker, you’d better give it up as early as possible. Even if you are not smoker, it is better to avoid passive smoking.

Besides avoiding tobacco, alcohol and stimulating foods such as spicy foods, polluted foods, PKD patients should avoid strenuous activities or abdominal traumas to avoid cyst rupture. Cyst rupture often occurs when the cyst is larger than 3cm and it often cause serious consequence. Preventing urinary tract infections is also very important especially among female patients.
