Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a group of disorders that result from the formation and progressive enlargement of cysts in the kidneys without dysplasia, usually leading to renal failure.

It is recommended that PKD patient should drink more water (about 4000ml) to maintain daily urine output about 2000-2500ml. Having cranberry juice or lemon juice are also good for PKD.

Avoid drinking alcohol, coffee or other caffeine-containing drinks such as strong tea which can cause dehydration and worsen renal damages. What is more, caffeine can promote the cell proliferation and the secretion of cyst fluid so as to cause the renal cysts to experience rapid growth and enlargement, caffeine-containing foods and drinks should be avoided.

Have less salt and use some salt substitutes such as herbal seasonings while cooking meals. Low-salt diets can maintain fairly urine output, reduce cyst enlargement and secretion of cyst fluids, lower the incidence of urinary tract infections and kidney stones which are common complications of polycystic kidney disease. Low-salt diets can also help control high blood pressure and reduce renal damages due to high pressure, high filtration and high perfusion in the kidneys.

Protein-restricted diets. When renal functions are damaged, protein intake should be limited to reduce burdens and strain to the kidneys. When more than 50% kidney functions are lost, low-protein diet should be advocated. Daily protein intake should be controlled within 0.7-1.0g.

Have more fresh vegetables and fruits is good for PKD. Radish contains rich iron and it can help alleviate renal anemia; black fugus can help dissolve kidney stones. What is more, veggies and fruits are mostly alkaline foods which can play auxiliary effects at treating PKD and other kidney diseases.

However if patients develop electrolytes imbalances such as hyperkalemia or hyperphosphatemia, some high-potassium and high-phosphorus fruits and veggies should be avoided or limited.

Diet therapy is one important part of treatments for polycystic kidney disease because it will accompany the patients for life-long time, therefore long term treatment plan is very necessary. Patients should adhere to proper diet principles and carefully choose proper foods to eat.
