PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) OverviewThis article is an overview about Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD). If you have any question when reading it, you are welcomed to email to us at or leave a message below.

What is Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD)?

Polycystic Kidney Disease is a genetic disorder that is characterized by a cluster of cysts on one or both kidneys. Cysts are noncancerous round sacs containing water-like fluid. The cysts vary in size and, as they accumulate more fluid, they can grow very large.

What causes Polycystic Kidney Disease?

The real causes of Polycystic Kidney Disease is unclear now, but gene mutation, infection, or trauma in surgery can act on the formation of kidney cysts.

There are two types of PKD:

● ADPKD (Autosomal Dominant PKD). It accounts for about 90% of PKD cases. Symptoms usually develop later in life, between the ages of 30 an 40.

● ARPKD (Autosomal Recessive PKD). It always happen in infants. Both parents must carry the gene for the disease.

What are the symptoms of Polycystic Kidney Disease?

● Dull pain in the lower back, sides or abdomen

● Urinary changes: frequent and urgent urination

● High blood pressure

● Fatigue

● Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea

● Pale skin

● Foamy or bloody urine

Some complications may include:

● Kidney stone

● Urinary tract infection

● Liver cyst

● Brain aneurysm

How is Polycystic Kidney Disease diagnosed?

Imaging tests used to diagnose PKD include:

● Abdominal ultrasound

● Abdominal CT scan

●Abdominal MRI scan

● Intravenous pyelogram (IVP)

Sometimes a genetic testing is necessary if someone in your family has ever been diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease.

What are the treatment for Polycystic Kidney Disease?

● Medicines

Medicines are prescribed to relieve some symptoms. They may include:

- Painkillers

- Blood pressure medication

- Antibiotics (to treat UTI)

- Diuretics, also called “water pills” (to help remove excess fluid)

● Surgery

There are two commonly used surgery, namely, laparoscopic decortication and percutaneous aspiration. They are used to drain cyst and help relieve discomfort.

Chinese herbs

If you do not have uncontrolled symptoms, you are not recommended to take medicines or surgery as the first treatment, since they can cause adverse side effects. I strongly recommend you to take natural Chinese herbs and therapies to shrink kidney cyst as well as enhancing kidney function.
