PKD & Kidney Cysts

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a group of disorders that result from the formation and progressive enlargement of cysts in the kidneys without dysplasia, usually leading to renal failure.

Polycystic kidney disease is characterized by many renal cysts in one or both kidneys. There is another renal cystic disease in clinic that is easy to be misdiagnosed with PKD, that is multiple renal cysts. Therefore it is very necessary to know how to distinguish from the two diseases so as to have more targeted and effective treatment.

Polycystic kidney disease is congenital and hereditary. It is caused by gene mutation and in most cases the patients have family history of the disease. Multiple renal cyst will not be passed to the following generations and patients have no family members having the same problem.

Both the number and size of renal cysts in PKD will increase along with time and in the end stage the kidney will be filled with numerous renal cysts. What is more, other organs will be affected and patients will form cysts in their liver, pancreas, spleen, ovary, arachnoid, pineal gland, etc. In case of multiple renal cysts, there are usually less than 3 cysts and there are at most up to 10, while PKD patients can have countless cysts in their kidneys.

PKD usually affect bilateral kidneys and unilateral PKD is very rare. About 90% PKD cases are bilateral and both kidneys are full of renal cysts of various sizes. Multiple renal cysts usually affect one kidney.

PKD patients often have obvious clinical symptoms such as back pain, urinary tract infections, hematuria, back pain, urinary pain after they are 40 years old. What is more, PKD patients often have high blood pressure even when their kidney functions are still normal. Multiple renal cysts are often found by accident in physical examination. Some patients can have back pain, but they usually have no hypertension and other complications as in PKD.

PKD can cause renal parenchymal damages and affect normal renal functions; patients of multiple renal cysts usually have normal renal functions and all the indicators in kidney function test can be in the normal range.

Besides, PKD will cause palpable abdominal masses and greatly enlarge the kidneys.

An accurate diagnosis is the premise of effective and successful treatment, therefore it is important to first make clear whether it is PKD or multiple renal cysts before seeking treatment options.
