Is PKD life threatening? Polycystic Kidney Disease is not deadly in early stage. However, if we do not take some preventive measures and just leave it alone, it will deteriorate to end stage kidney failure and cause lots of serious complications like brain aneurysm and heart failure which are life-threatening.

PKD is the abbreviation of Polycystic Kidney Disease which is a genetic kidney disorder and characterized by increasing cysts in kidney. In the very beginning of PKD, patients may feel nothing different with others. With the progression of illness condition, they will experience lots of discomforts like flank pain, lower back pain, groin pain, abdominal pain, high blood pressure and bubbly urine and so on. These symptoms are not dental, but they can worsen kidney condition and accelerate Polycystic Kidney Disease. Therefore, it has clinical significance for patients to bring these symptoms under control.

PKD is life threatening when it progresses to end stage kidney failure. In clinic, dialysis or kidney transplant is needed to help kidney failure patients to deal with failed kidney. Kidneys are responsible for discharging toxins. When kidneys fail to work properly, toxins build up in the blood, which is very life-threatening. Dialysis is a medical method that help to filter blood with dialysis machine outside patient’s body. It is life-saving, but meanwhile torturous and risky. Long-term application of dialysis will cause lots of terrible side effects like low blood pressure, muscle cramp, headache, and itching skin. For PKD patients, once they start dialysis, they have to do dialysis regularly as dialysis can not help to repair kidney damages at all. Kidney transplant is the last option for people with completely failed kidneys. The most life-threatening factor for kidney transplant is kidney rejection which is the real reason why patients need to take immunosuppressive agents for the rest of their life.

Lastly, another reason why PKD is life threatening is because it can cause life-threatening complications like heart failure and brain aneurysm. Polycystic Kidney Disease can cause many complications like polycystic liver disease, high blood pressure, kidney stone and urinary tract infection, heart failure and brain aneurysm and so on. These complications may cause no threat on patient’s life within a short term. However, if they are not managed properly, life threatening conditions will be caused.
