Typical symptoms of polycystic kidney disease are renal cysts, high blood pressure, frequent urinary tract infections, back pain, blood in urine, abdominal masses, etc.

With continuous increase and enlargement of renal cysts in both kidneys, kidney functions will be gradually lost and in the end develop into end stage kidney disease.

When PKD progresses into the end stage, the already existed symptoms will become more serious. Besides, patients will develop some new symptoms.

End stage PKD patients will have the following symptoms and complications.

Dry or itchy skin. Due to deposition of toxins on the skin, patient’s skin can be dry, darkened or itchy. Due to swelling, their skin is easy to be injured and infected.

Fatigue and lethargy. End stage PKD patients will develop renal anemia which makes them lack of energy and interests. Patients will always feel tired even with mild activities. They often complain about feeling cold and weak.

High blood pressure and headache. Nearly all patients on end stage polycystic kidney disease will develop high blood pressure (hypertension) which can cause headache and increase the risk of many other complications and worsen renal functions.

Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite. Due to high serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen and the accumulation of other metabolic wastes and toxins, patients will have a series of digestive and gastrointestinal disorders such as nausea, vomiting, poor appetite, diarrhea, ammonia smell in the mouth or even gastrointestinal bleeding.

Muscle twitching, restless leg syndrome. End stage of PKD can damage the nerves or even the brain and cause limb numbness, muscle twitching and restless leg syndrome which often aggravate poor sleep quality in the patients.

Besides, other symptoms include weight loss, bone pain, difficulty in concentration, irregular menstruation in women, low sexual interest or impotence, etc.

In a word, when PKD progresses into the end stage, patients will always have sick feelings and nearly all the systems and organs in the body will be involved. Patients will have to rely on dialysis to help remove metabolic wastes so as to make them more comfortable.
