What happens if urinary tract infection in PKD is not treated timely? Clinical survey show that almost a half of Polycystic Kidney Disease patients experience urinary tract infection in their lifetime. However, in many cases, in many cases, patients do not take it seriously, so urinary tract infection is not treated properly and effectively. Well, what happens if urinary tract infection in PKD is left uncontrolled?

Urinary tract infection is an infection that occurs in urinary tract and not life-threatening. For people with PKD, especially female patients, they suffer from urinary tract infection easily because of affected kidney tissues and impaired kidney function. For PKD patients, if urinary tract infection is not treated or managed properly, they will be at high risk to suffer from the following problems:

1. Kidney infection: urinary tract infection refers to infection that occurs in urinary tract. Without timely and effective control, infection may spread to kidney and thus cause kidney infection. Kidney infection is one of the dominant aggravating factors of PKD.

2. Acute kidney failure: urinary tract infection may affect kidney finally and accelerate PKD. Under such a condition, Polycystic Kidney Disease patients are very likely to suffer from acute kidney failure.

3. Urocystitis: without uncontrolled urinary tract infection, PKD also run the risk of developing urocystitis which may bring patients symptoms like frequent urination, urgent urination, urodynia, lower abdominal pain and blood urine and so on.

Since uncontrolled urinary tract infection is very common and risky complication of Polycystic Kidney Disease, it is necessary for PKD patients to learn the basic management about urinary tract infection:

1. Drinking large amounts of water (at least two litres a day), if you are not asked to limit fluid intake. This will help to flush bacterium in urinary tract away, which is very effective in treating, at least remitting urinary tract infection.

2. Antibiotics can be applied if the illness condition is seriously.

3. Treating PKD actively with right treatment method. Since urinary tract infection occurs because of damaged kidney tissues and impaired kidney function, treating PKD fundamentally will be helpful for preventing or dealing with urinary tract infection.

With different illness condition, PKD patients may need to take different measures to deal with urinary tract infection, so it is very necessary for PKD patients to go to their doctor for consultation when urinary tract infection appears.
