PKD and Urinary Tract InfectionWhat is the relationship between PKD and urinary tract infection? Many PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) patients complain they experience urinary tract infection easily and frequently. Is it related with their kidney problem? If yes, will urinary tract infection affect their illness condition?

Will PKD cause frequent urinary tract infection?

As a matter of fact, urinary tract infection is one of the common complications of PKD and it is especially common among female patients. Clinical studies show that approximately 30% to 50% of patients with PKD will have a urinary tract infection during their lifetime. With urinary tract infection, patients always experience a series of symptoms like pain and burning feeling when urinating, strong and persistent urge to urinate, passing frequent and small amounts of urine, discomforts or pressure in the lower abdomen, pain in the pelvic area or back, strong-smelling urine and cloudy urine. If any PKD patient found he has some of these symptoms, he should know these symptoms might be caused by urinary tract infection.

Drinking lots of water is helpful for preventing or alleviating urinary tract infection. However, if the illness condition is serious, antibiotics should be taken timely.

How does urinary tract infection affect PKD?

A urinary tract infection may occur anywhere in the urinary tract between the urethra and either or both of the kidneys. Urinary tract infection is not life-threatening, but if we do not bring it under control, more serious and bothersome symptoms will be caused. In PKD cases, if urinary tract infection is not treated properly and effectively, they will be very likely to suffer from:

1. Acute kidney failure

Infection is one of the leading aggravating factors for kidney problem. For PKD patients, frequent and uncontrolled urinary tract infection may cause quick progression of illness condition and they may thus suffer from kidney failure early.

2. Pyelonephritis

Uncontrolled urinary tract infection, PKD patients suffer from pyelonephritis easily. Pyelonephritis is the inflammation of the upper urinary tract and can cause permanent kidney damages.
