PKD & Kidney Cysts

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a group of disorders that result from the formation and progressive enlargement of cysts in the kidneys without dysplasia, usually leading to renal failure.

Why PKD Patients Have High Creatinine In Blood

2013-04-02 16:41

Sometimes PKD patients can find their serum creatinine level is higher than normal range and this means that their kidney functions are affected and at least more than 50% kidney functions are lost, therefore early and proper treatments should be sought to prevent further deterioration of kidney functions and slow down the illness progression into complete renal failure.

Creatinine in the blood comes from metabolism of muscle masses and the meat products we eat, therefore every day certain amount of creatinine will be produced and released into the blood stream. Under normal circumstances, the kidneys will discharge all the creatinine from the blood, therefore kidney problem is the most possible cause of high creatinine especially if it is persistent high creatinine.

PKD patients have clusters of renal cysts in their kidneys and these numerous cysts will continue to become larger to replace normal renal tissues and cause gradual loss of kidney functions. Though it is chronic kidney disease, it will progress in the end into renal failure.

When more than half of all kidney functions are lost, the impaired kidneys can not remove creatinine efficiently from the blood and patients will have high serum creatinine levels in their tests.

Besides effective treatments for removing or shrinking renal cysts, there are several self-care measures that can help lower high creatinine and relieve the symptoms of high creatinine.

Have more fluid intake to avoid dehydration and increase blood flow so as to help the kidneys flush more creatinine and other wastes outsides. Dehydration can further elevate high creatinine, therefore preventing dehydration is very important. Alcohol, coffee should be avoided because they can cause dehydration. Besides, alcohol, coffee and other caffeine-containing foods can stimulate the secretion of more cyst fluid, therefore PKD patients should stay away from alcohol and coffee.

Some natural herbal medicines such as dandelion root, cranberry can help cleanse the kidneys, treat renal inflammation and benefit PKD patients a lot. Some herbs can also help improve kidney functions and high creatinine will be lowered naturally when kidney functions are recovered.
