Why Are Aneurysms Prevalent in PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease)The most serious possible complication of PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) is a cerebral or brain aneurysm. Approximately 3 to 7 percent of young adults with ADPKD may have brain aneurysms. Why are aneurysm prevalent in Polycystic Kidney Disease?

Causes of aneurysm in Polycystic Kidney Disease

Aneurysm is a bulging blood vessel due to weakening of the blood vessel wall. This condition can be associated with atherosclerosis, high blood pressure or infections.

In Polycystic Kidney Disease patients, high blood pressure is a common complication. Enlarged kidney cysts compress nearby organs, including the kidney itself. As a result, the kidney is stimulated to secrete more renin, starting renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. This system will elevate blood pressure.

High blood pressure is a leading cause of brain aneurysm.

Who will get aneurysm?

Approximately 3 to 7 percent of young adults with ADPKD (Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease) may have brain aneurysms, and the frequency increases to 12 to 15 percent if someone else in the patient’s family has had an intracranial aneurysm. Compared with the general population, the risk of developing an aneurysm in ADPKD is approximately fivefold greater. People with a first-degree relative with a history of intracranial aneurysm or subarachnoid hemorrhage are at the highest risk of forming an aneurysm.

What are the symptoms of brain aneurysm?

Small brain aneurysm won’t cause any symptoms. When the aneurysm enlarges before rupture, the individual may experience such symptoms as a sudden and unusually severe headache, nausea, vision impairment, vomiting, and loss of consciousness.

If the brain aneurysm rupture, symptoms can include:

-A sudden severe headache that can last from several hours to days

-Persistent nausea and vomiting

-Drowsiness, confusion and/or loss of consciousness
