Signs of Polycystic Kidney Disease

● Back pain

This is the most common sign when people have Polycystic Kidney Disease. The cysts enlarge to very large size and start to compress renal tissues. The capsule of kidneys are stretched so pains occur in kidney area. Sometimes, this painful feeling can travel to upper parts such as flank and abdomen.

● High blood pressure

High blood pressure can be increased by the compression from big cysts. The big cysts oppress the kidney and stimulate it to secrete more renins, a hormone that will start the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). The disordered system will raise the blood pressure to a high level.

● Protein or blood in urine

These two urine changes indicate the cysts has caused kidney damage. Proteinuria is not so common as hematuria (blood in urine). Due to the compression of cysts, the tiny blood vessels can burst so that blood is seen in the urine.

Some complications include:

● Kidney stone

● Repeated urinary tract infection (UTI)

● Itchy skin, pale skin

● Anemia that can lead to fatigue, dizziness, headache, etc

● Bone problem

● Cyst in the liver, pancreas and testicle

● Brain aneurysm
