Treatment for Secondary Hypertension in PKDPKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) is one of the common factory causing secondary hypertension. In turn, hypertension, as a disease can affect the kidneys. Therefore, treatment for secondary hypertension in PKD patients is very important.

Two types of hypertension

● Primary or essential hypertension, that has no known cause, is diagnosed in about 95% hypertensive people. There is no clear causes of this case.

● Secondary hypertension is often caused by reversible factors, and is sometimes curable. This may be caused by kidney damage or impaired function, pregnancy, side effects of medicines, obesity, thyroid dysfunction.

Among kidney disease, more than half of Polycystic Kidney Disease will have high blood pressure.

Causes of secondary hypertension in PKD

Polycystic Kidney Disease causes a cluster of cysts on kidneys. These cysts enlarges and compress nearby organs, including the kidney itself. As a result, the kidneys are compressed and blood volume reduces. The kidneys are stimulated to secrete more renins, which will start the RASS (Renin-angiotensin-aldosterone System), increasing high blood pressure.

Therefore, to lower high blood pressure, patients should not only shrink kidney cysts but also take treatments to improve renal function.

● Diet restrictions: High sodium intake will raise the blood pressure levels, so patients should avoid salty foods like pickles, processed meat, canned vegetables, and fast foods, etc. For Polycystic Kidney Disease patients, they need to take even less sodium. In general, daily sodium recommended amount is less than 2 grams (2,000 mg) for populations.

● Shrink kidney cyst: This is to reduce the pressure caused by kidney cyst enlargement. Traditional way is surgery, which is taken to drain the cystic fluid and cut off parts of big cysts. However, surgery just has temporary effect, and cyst will keep on going and become large again within 6 months to 2 years.

Therefore, Polycystic Kidney Disease patients should take therapies not only shrink kidney cyst but also improve kidney function. This is to prevent the recurrence of kidney cyst, so as to control high blood pressure from the root. If you need guidance, please consult our doctors online directly.
