PKD and constant painRecently, I received an email from a PKD patient: I have constant pain in my side and my doctor said not to worry about it. It has been happening since last october. Though it is not painful enough to take pain pill, I am getting tired of being in pain. I ever asked my doctor if an ultra sound would help to show anything, but he said it was not necessary. Does this sound odd?

PKD, differently from many other kinds of kidney problem like Nephrotic Syndrome, Hypertensive Nephropathy and IgA Nephropathy, is marked by increasing and enlarge fluid collection in kidney. Mostly, it involves two kidneys, and it is common for PKD patients to feel constant pain in their two sides. In cases of PKD, constant pain is usually caused by the following several factors:

Enlarged kidney cyst

This is the most common cause of constant pain in PKD. Our kidney is covered by a membrane called renal capsule where there are neves. Enlarged kidney cysts pull renal capsule, leading to pain in the kidney location.

Kidney infection

Kidney infection is another common cause of kidney pain and it occurs easily in various kidney problems, including PKD. In such a case, antibiotics will be helpful.

Kidney stone

Kidney stone is a common complication of PKD. When stones suck in kidney or ureter, patients will feel pain. Therefore, kidney stone also can be a cause of constant pain for PKD patients.

Rupture of kidney cyst

Cysts in PKD enlarge over time. When they enlarge to a certain size, they burst easily and they may rupture because of mild knock on kidney location. Rupture of kidney cyst also can cause pain in kidney location.

Constant pain is the chief complain of PKD patients, and with different causes, patients need to take different measures and attitude. Lastly, if anyone wants to learn more further information, please feel free to consult us.
