Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a group of disorders that result from the formation and progressive enlargement of cysts in the kidneys without dysplasia, usually leading to renal failure.

PKD (polycystic kidney disease) is a hereditary renal disorder, but it will in the end affect many systems and organs in the patients, therefore it is necessary to have a clear understanding of all the symptoms, signs and complications that PKD patients will have.

·cysts in one or both kidneys. There are multiple fluid-filled sacs in the renal cortex and renal medulla. Both the size and number of the cyst will increase along with age.

·enlarged abdomen. With continuous enlargement and increase of renal cysts, the patient’s kidneys will be greatly enlarged. They can feel palpable masses in their abdomen and their abdomen will be greatly enlarged because these renal cysts need space.

·high blood pressure and headache. Even when renal functions are still normal, patients can have elevated blood pressure. Nearly all end stage PKD patients will experience high blood pressure which can become even worse with illness progression.

·pains in the back, abdomen and flank. The pain can be dull and persistent or it can be sharp, sudden and unbearable.

·frequent urination. The cyst can oppress renal tubules and affect the renal concentration functions. Patients will suffer from frequent urination especially at nights.

·blood in urine. In case of rupture of the renal cyst or blood vessels, patients can notice that their urine is cola-colored.

·urinary tract infection or kidney infection. Since the normal urine flow is hindered, patients are easy to get infections in their kidneys, cysts and urinary tract.

·kidney stone. It is a common complication of PKD and about 20% patients have kidney stone.

·abnormal heart valves. It affects about 25% PKD and patients may have palpitations or chest pains.

·aneurysms. It is the most harmful symptom for PKD patients and it is often the major cause of early death, therefore early prevention and proper treatment is very important.

·diverticulosis. Small pouches can form in the colon and cause abdominal pain and fever.

·kidney failure. PKD will in the end progress into kidney failure and patients will develop a series of symptoms of kidney failure.
