Hearing Loss in Polycystic Kidney DiseaseIt is difficult for many people to associate hearing loss with Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD). However, hearing loss caused by PKD does appear on some patients. Well then, how does Polycystic Kidney Disease cause hearing loss?

Generally, PKD patients don’t have hearing problems unless large part of their kidney function has lost. The following is a real story from an elder woman: My troubles began with hearing loss and diagnosis of Polycystic Kidney Disease. I was almost deaf when my blood test shows my kidneys were down to 20% of function. I was told that I had been losing 1% kidney function a month in the past severe years. Now, I am probably at 12% and my hearing problem becomes more and more severely.

How does Polycystic Kidney Disease cause hearing loss?

It is reported that ear infections both viral infections and bacterial infections, ototoxic drugs, and swelling all can increase the incidence of hearing loss for people with PKD.

Infections: When the normal kidney tissues are replaced by enlarged kidney cysts, more and more wastes and toxins will build up in the blood and lower patients’ immunity. Then, these patients are more susceptible to infections. Generally the more kidney function is lost, the higher incidence of infections.

Medications: For people with PKD, they may eat some drugs to ease their symptoms without knowing some medicines are harmful for our ear. For example, aspirin, quinine, certain antibiotics, etc, all are common medicines in our daily life but are ototoxic.

Swelling: The last cause, swelling, usually occurs as a consequence of water and sodium retention and heavy loss of protein in the urine. It can be solved by healthy diet and correct medicines.

Some patients’ ear damage can be reversed by correct treatment, while some others’ is irreversible. Usually, the sooner you get treatment, your better your hearing ability.
