Question: Hi, I’m trying to find out if my pins and needles also joint pain and back pain could be linked to my PKD, I also have the cysts on my liver as well.

Could Joint Pain and Back Pain Be Linked to PKDAnswer: Pain is a common complaint in patients with polycystic kidney disease (PKD), afflicting about 60% of patients with an established diagnosis.

PKD can cause back pain.

Due to compression of cysts on the surrounding tissues, traction on the pedicle of the kidney, and distension of the renal capsule, it is likely for you to have chronic pain. Besides, enlarging cysts can cause increased abdominal girth, leading to increased lumbar lordosis that accelerates degenerative changes in the spine. This imbalance of the spine can be the source of a back pain as well.

But PKD does not commonly cause joint pain.

Joint pain can occur in the late stages of kidney disease. It can result from an imbalance of minerals (phosphorous, calcium) or gout can develop from a build up or uric acid crystals in the joints. This only happens in late stage kidney disease, not when the kidneys are working well. PKD itself does not affect joints; it's poor kidney function that can do this.

How to relieve the pain for PKD patients?

You may think of painkillers. They are helpful, but most of them have renal toxicity, which can cause further kidney damage. Therefore, you had better look for some other natural treatment, such as acupuncture and moxibustion. Moreover, you can try Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy. It can massage your back to relieve your pain. Long-term use of it can also stop the growth of renal cysts and shrink them to relieve the pain from the root. And it is also helpful for repair kidney damage and promote renal function.

Joints can be affected by many other factors, regardless of PKD: arthritis, being over weight, vitamin D or calcium deficiency, wear and tear, injury, too much exercise, lack of exercise and a whole host of other diseases.

Without good control of PKD, you do not only have pins and needs, joint pain and back pain, but also many other severe symptoms and complications. For more information on PKD treatment, please leave a message below or contact online doctor.
