Swelling and Polycystic Kidney Disease: Causes and TreatmentSwelling, compared with kidney pain, isn’t so common for Polycystic Kidney Disease patients. However, some PKD patients indeed find swelling appears in their feet, ankle, leg or other parts of the body. Well then, what are the causes and treatment for swelling in Polycystic Kidney Disease?

Common causes

Individuals with PKD usually have a great difference in the underlying cause of their swelling. Generally, three factors are more common than others.

1. Water retention: When patients’ kidneys are damaged by enlarged fluid-filled cysts, the glomerular filtration function and renal tubular reabsorption function is also impaired easily, resulting in excess water retention in the body.

2. Loss of protein in urine: Proteinurine is another common causes for renal swelling. If your edema is due to heavy loss of protein in urine, you can find your urine is foamy.

3. Hypertension:The circulatory activity of a person with high blood pressure is significantly obstructed, causing fluid to build in the lower extremities. In this condition, besides edema, you may also have a loss of feeling in the feet and can lead the sufferer to develop local wounds and ulcers that refuse to heal.

4. Medications: Some medicines can cause swelling that affects both legs equally. Corticosteroids, anti-inflammatory drugs such as NSAIDS, some anti-hypertensive agents, diabetes drugs, etc, all may increase the risk of your swelling.

5. Alcohol: Unhealthy lifestyle like alcohol can also cause swelling in both ankles or feet. In addition, alcohol may also cause swelling.

Relative treatment

What treatment people who have PKD and swelling should take is decided by the cause. If yours is caused by the former three factors, some medications are needed to keep your condition from aggravating. For example, if your swelling is due to hypertension, you should take some anti-hypertensive agents and develop a low-sodium diet. Among these medicines, ACEI and ARBs are more suitable. As for the later two causes, modifications of lifestyle and drug changes can be helpful. Any confusion about your treatment, diet or lifestyle?
