PKD & Kidney Cysts

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a group of disorders that result from the formation and progressive enlargement of cysts in the kidneys without dysplasia, usually leading to renal failure.

Transplant Surgery For Polycystic Kidney Disease

2013-04-06 17:14

Polycystic kidney disease or PKD is a chronic and progressive renal disorder characterized by multiple renal cysts in one or both kidneys. PKD often affect bilateral kidneys and in the end stage the kidneys will be greatly enlarged and normal renal tissues are replaced by large renal cysts.

When more than 85%-90% kidney functions are lost, PKD patients will need to have dialysis or kidney transplant especially if the patients have serious infection, high blood pressure, pains that can not be controlled by medicines.

Usually PKD patients will have already begun dialysis or nephrectomy before the surgery of kidney transplant because it is not easy to find a matching kidney donor. Transplanting a healthy kidney into the body of PKD patient can help get rid of dialysis, rebuild kidney functions, greatly improve their life quality and life expectancy. What is more important, the transplanted kidney will not develop renal cysts, therefore the root problem of PKD can be solved by transplant surgery. At present, the successful rate of kidney transplant has been greatly improved and patients need not to worry too much about the risks of this surgery.

Even though, patients after kidney transplant still have worries such as organ-rejection and infections. The survival rate and complications after kidney transplant for PKD patients are same as other kidney diseases. The main concern after the surgery for PKD patients is infections among which urinary tract infection is the most common. Therefore it is necessary to have early detection, effective prevention and treatments for infection so as to improve the survival rate and life span of the transplanted kidney.

Kidney transplant is an effective treatment for PKD, but it is not a treatment for polycystic kidney disease and it is not the only nor the best treatment option. Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy is an external application of herbal medicines which helps gradually shrink renal cysts to smaller size and block further secretion of cyst fluid by the epithelial cells on the cyst wall so as to much relieve symptoms and prevent further deterioration of illness conditions. Herbal medicines can provide necessary nutritions to repair damaged renal tissues so as to gradually improve kidney functions so that patients need not to have dialysis or transplant surgery or at least much delay the need for dialysis and kidney transplant if the illness conditions are too serious to be reversed by Chinese medicines.
